The “Sportsman Flyer Company” started not as a business, but as a hobby. I have built and collected cars and bicycles for years and have always wanted to add a Schwinn Whizzer motorized bicycle to my collection. While keeping my eyes open for just the right bike I started seeing motorized bicycles around with newer two stroke engines. I decided to build one and found a vintage Schwinn Panther frame to start with. This particular frame, commonly called a straight bar frame because of it's unique middle frame tube in the front triangle, is very similar in shape to early motorcycles. Gas tanks were added into the pocket between the top and middle frame tubes on these early motorcycles, so it only made sense to build a gas tank to fit the Panther frame in the same fashion. Using my fabrication and CAD design skills I designed and built my first in-frame gas tank that fit the Panther frame perfectly. Soon I had people asking if I could build more of these gas tanks. As I continued with my own build I quickly discovered that most of the unique vintage style parts I needed were simply not available. This led to the development of a series of vintage style parts not available anywhere else. Soon people were requesting custom frame and tank kits, as well as seats, handlebars, wheels, and mounts for more powerful engines. The Sportsman Flyer Company was born.

Bill Bragg, carpintero de profesión y, por culpa de un accidente laboral, ingeniero autodidacta modificó los conceptos conocidos de la época con sus diseños radicales pensados, ó soñados, para correr lo maximo posible.

En 1958 se le atribuye la primera creación de una maquina con doble motor, dos Triumph sobre un largo chasis Norton Featherbed. Él perseveró con esta moto durante unos 18 meses mas o menos, pero nunca quedó del todo resuelto el acoplamiento de los dos motores.

Todos estos experimentos le llevaron a querer mejorar sus diseños y a crear maquinas increibles.

So….. Who are we??

Roy Norton and Thomas Kasher are our real names. (Roy is 6’4″ and looks like a Giraffe, and Tom??……. Well he’s a Gok Wan look-a-like gypsy.) We are both pretty down-to-earth and hope to think we are likable chaps. Rod ‘n’ Todd was coined by our good friend Mark Wells’ wife, Jenny. and has stuck with us to this day.

We both have a passion for all things cool, including motorcycles. We set out within this project to create a bike which filled the void of cool bikes for the younger generations, and provide a solution to appeal to exsisting riders and hopefully draw in a new crowd completely.

The Project will eventually be displayed at the New Designers 2011 show in London, but there is a lot of work has to happen between now and then. So Howay, let’s gaarn!!

Chaquetas de cuero clásicas para moteros

El origen de las chaquetas de cuero para andar en moto se remonta justo al a final de la primera guerra mundial, cuando muchos diseños empleados por los ejércitos que entraron en conflicto fueron adaptados para su uso civil y la motocicleta comenzó a extenderse.

En un principio eran chaquetas largas que llegaban por debajo de las rodillas, tal y como las empleadas por los oficiales en los tanques o en las trincheras durante la guerra pero enseguida se fueron recortando ya que los faldones pegaban contra las ruedas. Precisamente, las dos chaquetas de motero más famosas eran adaptaciones de diseños para el uniforme de los oficiales alemanes.

Una característica común en todas ellas es que el cuero, de cabra o caballo, era grueso, extremadamente duro y rígido para proteger la piel de sufrir heridas ante una posible caida.

SCHOTT BROTHERS "PERFECTO"

La primera chaqueta de cuero considerada propiamente de motero y probablemente la másfamosade todas, fuediseñadapor los Schott Brothers en 1928 en USA, la bautizaron “Perfecto” y salía al mercado con un precio de 5,5$, el equivalente a unos 70€ actuales.

La Perfecto estaba basada en el corte de la famosa chaqueta de cuero larga que usaban los oficiales alemanes y su fama se disparó cuando en 1953 Marlon Brando aparecía ataviado

con una de ellas y conduciendo una Triumph Thunderbird en la película “The Wild One”, en la cual interpretaba al líder de una banda de moteros.

Las Perfecto han sido copiadas y modificadas hasta la saciedad, siendo aun hoy

en día una de las chaquetas de cuero más extendidas a lo largo y ancho del mundo y la chaqueta de motero por antonomasia. A los pocos años de ser sacada al mercado, fue copiada por los dos grandes fabricantes de motos estadounidenses de los años 40; Indian bautizó a su copia como “Ranger” contando con una versión femenina llamada “Rangerette”. Harley Davidson hizo lo propio llamando a sus copias “Cycle Champ” y “Cycle Queen”.

Constituida en standard, otros fabricantes de cuero se subieron al carro de la copia; Buco, Hercules, Beck, Blatt, Grais, Sears y Oakbrook en los 60 y una infinidad más, dada su alta demanda a la que se incorporaron sectores ajenos al mundo de las motos. Las chaquetas tipo “Perfecto” se habían convertido en parte de la indumentaria de la cultura rocker generada en los años 50

por su asociación al mundo de las motos y a su imagen “canalla”, surgida tras la proliferación de las bandas de moteros relacionadas con actos delictivos en la segunda mitad
de los años 40. Tanto fue así que en muchos colegios estas chaquetas fueron prohibidas.

para sus respectivos ejércitos. Tanto en USA como en Inglaterra nacieron las chaquetas que hoy conocemos como“bombers”,por ser utilizadas principalmente por el ejército del aire pero al finalizar el conflicto, el mundo de las motos volvió de nuevo a copiar los diseños del ejército alemán.
Junto a la Perfecto, otra de las chaquetas de motero más emblemáticas es la llamada “Café Racer”. Estos cueros eran una copia descarada de la chaqueta del uniforme de piloto alemán de la segunda guerra mundial, exceptuando las solapas en los hombros donde originalmente iban colocados los galones de oficial. Frente a las numerosas cremalleras y bolsillos de las Perfecto, las racers destacaban por su elegante simplicidad.

Se implantaron en Inglaterra al ser adoptadas por una sub-cultura dentro del mundo de las motos llamada “café racer”. Tras la guerra, las islas británicas fueron dotadas de una red de autopistas, por cierto otro invento y alemán que pusieron en práctica casi todos los países del mundo tras quedar demostrada su utilidad durante el conflicto bélico.

En las autopistas británicas proliferaron numerosas cafeterías a pie de carretera, a modo de “aéreas

de descanso”y los moteros británicos aprovecharon los tramos que quedaban entre cafetería y cafetería para realizar carreras y pruebas de velocidad. De aquí viene el apelativo “café racer”. El café de moteros más famoso es el Ace Café a las afueras de Londres.

"Hello from Olympia, WA, ....I totally dig your blog. I am constantly amazed at the bikes and culture information that you manage to put together.

After seeing your post the other day "http://www.8negro.com/2012/01/cxy-500-by-ied.html" I thought I should share pictures of my completed build.

I have a 1981 CX 500 Custom that started out chunky and chromed, but after some modifications has become a sporty little ride. I just started removing parts and it kept looking and performing better. As it sits now: bobbed rear fender, LED turn signals, bobber tail light, clubman bars and mirrors, sightly padded skateboard deck seat(my first attempt at upholstery), K&N drop in filter(I ride in the rain to much for pods), rebuilt and jetted carbs, Mac 2-1 exhaust into a Yoshimura can off of a mid 90's Katana, scrapped piece of bronze turned into a licence plate holder, finished off with a rattle can paint job and pin-striping by local sign painter Vince Ryland. It's not Rat and it's not show quality. It's loud and fast and fun .I built it in the parking lot next to my truck when it wasn't raining to hard!

Australian Street Artist Dave "Meggs" Hooke came up to the Endeavor Snowboards' design office in September to paint some custom installations, including the largest wall mural he has ever done. Meggs' also offers up insights into the art scene and his inspirations.
The first in a series of content films Endeavor will be releasing this fall, Meggs captures the dedication of Endeavor Snowboards bringing art to snowboard design.
